A chemical modification — shifting the position of two hydrogen molecules — makes the difference between mice that have important risk factors such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, fatty liver and insulin resistance or that are wholesome. Making the switch reversed these fat mice that were prediabetes also prevented the onset of those symptoms in mice. The finding pinpoints a’druggable’ goal that can be used to develop treatments for diabetes.
