No, Dove Body Polish should not be used on your face. But we’ll show you how to make a cheaper, healthier alternative to Dove’s exfoliating scrub that can be used all over your face and body.

So you tried Dove Exfoliating Body Polish and love the way it smells and makes your skin feel. Now you would love that smooth, polished look and feel for your face too. Right? Well, that may not be a good idea, especially if you have sensitive skin.

We’ll show you how to make a few luxurious feeling, pleasant smelling, healthy skin scrubs that will make your face and body feel like a baby’s bottom. And, these scrubs are very cheap and can be stored in your shower for weeks.

What is Dove Body Polish and why you shouldn’t use it on your face

Just as the product name suggests, Dove Body Polish is an exfoliating body cream that is meant to scrub and polish the skin on your body, not your face. It combines an exfoliating agent with moisturizers so you get smoother skin that’s also hydrated. That’s why it’s so popular.

What does exfoliate mean? The purpose of an exfoliating product is to scrub or slough off dry, flaky, dead skin cells for smoother, healthier-looking skin.

But you can make your own exfoliating, hydrating scrub for less than half the price without any additives, chemicals, or fragrances that can be used on your face and body.

Why you shouldn’t use this on the face?

In addition to hydrated silica (which is a sand like ingredient that “exfoliates your skin”), this body polish also contains whipped moisturizers, oils, fragrances, colors, and synthetic waxes.

And while it does smell wonderful and creates a positive shower experience, it’s not formulated to be used on the sensitive skin of the face and eyes. And, it shouldn’t be used by those prone to breakouts, irritation, fine lines or wrinkles.

Benefit of making a natural face and body polish

If you’re looking for a natural hydrating, exfoliating skin polisher that can be used on the face and body – why not make your own.

There are several advantages to making your own skin polish cream:

  • You control the ingredients so you can make it as strong or gentle as needed.
  • It’s all natural with no additives, waxes, or chemicals.
  • It contains natural oils and fragrances.
  • It’s cheap.

And, I promise, your homemade exfoliating scrub will smell just as great – if not better – because the fragrance will be from an all natural source.

Homemade face and body polish

The recipe for your homemade face and body polish is simple. It basically contains two ingredients, (1-part coconut oil mixed with 3-parts baking soda) but you can make substitutions which we’ll discuss later.

To start, mix the following ingredients in a plastic container that contains a lid:

  • Two ounces of coconut oil
  • Five or six ounces of baking soda
  • Use a spoon to up to mix well

The consistency looks a bit like grainy sugar frosting. You can play with this by adding more or less oil or baking soda. It depends on your preference. Personally, I don’t like it dripping with oil, I like it thicker with a consistency of sugar frosting.

Then place the container in your shower or by your sink. When your ready to use it, just scoop out a small amount (about size of quarter for face and more for the body) and massage your face and body as needed. Then rinse well.

CAUTION:

  1. Test on a small area of your skin first to see how it will react.
  2. Use caution in the shower, the oil could make the shower floor slippery.

Face and body scrub recipe substitutions

Substitutions:

Replace baking soda with sugar – This will give your scrub more oomph! Sugar granules are bigger than baking soda and will provide a deeper scrub.

Also, sugar is a natural exfoliating agent because it contains alpha hydroxy acids (AHA). These acid readily penetrate the upper layers of the skin breaking down the “glue” that holds the bonds together.

Replace oil with water – If you have oily skin you can mix the baking soda with water too. Just add a drop or two of water or the baking soda will dissolve.

What type of coconut oil is best?

The type of coconut oil you use is a personal preference. You can find a variety of coconut oils in the supermarket, but many are neutral in flavor and aroma because they’re made for cooking.

Personally, I love the smell of coconut oil in a hot shower, especially during the winter, it remines me of summer time and Pina-coladas!

So I use an organic, cold-pressed, unbleached,  extra virgin coconut oil that’s rich in medium chain triglycerides. And it has the full smell of coconuts – which is wonderful!

How often should I use this body polish

Most people start out using this once a week for the face and body. Then depending on your skin type and needs, you can increase to 2-3 times a week. If you have sensitive skin, rosacea, acne, or any other skin issues, please check with your dermatologist.
